Take (small) Action to Build Momentum That Lasts

My very first mountain bike wasn’t the best set of wheels to ride to work along the Charles River in Boston with, but it’s what I had at the time.  And it worked…

Until I crashed on Memorial Drive.  That’s a story for another article.

The first time I used my mountain bike on real mountain bike trails, I frustratedly thought that I couldn’t believe people actually rode their bikes over the rocks and roots on the trails we toured.

Riding technical trails wasn’t something that came easy to me, but because I don’t like feeling defeated, it was something I kept trying.

Eventually, with enough practice, and a new bike that wasn’t from the 80’s, I was enjoying the trail system behind our home and learning how to navigate the rocks, roots, twists, and turns “fairly well.”

Riding my bike became an important form of stress relief for me.  I often found myself making connections between the obstacles on the trails and how I was riding with the obstacles my coaching clients were facing.

I’d come home from my work breaks with even more ideas about improving one’s health, work performance, and life from just one session on two wheels!

Similar to my clients, some of the obstacles used to stop me in my tracks.  I would be timid or fearful about not clearing them, so I’d immediately hit the brakes.  Then I would get frustrated that I didn’t make progress, and had to start over again.

Eventually I realized that to get over the obstacles I needed to have momentum.  It didn’t have to be at top speed, but it was necessary to have some sort of movement to get over the rock or root system that caused disbelief in myself and an abrupt stop.

If this sounds at all familiar to you or anything you’ve experienced before, it’s probably because we all have.  Maybe not on a bicycle, but in some part of your life.  I guarantee it.

I don’t have to tell you that there will be obstacles and challenges on your way to a healthy lifestyle.

You see, the things we enjoy can be relative to the things we struggle with.  Embracing the struggles and challenges life throws at us and learning from each experience will build the momentum you need to get over the next obstacle.

And once you get over one, the next one doesn’t seem so bad.

Start with small actions.  Do them consistently.  Build your momentum with the things that work for YOU and that you enjoy doing.

If you’re the type who likes to have support and accountability - This is exactly why we created the 21-Day Holiday Habit Challenge.  So people can build their momentum of healthy habits NOW and be more prepared than ever when the holidays arrive.
